Event Chair Terry Tysseland
Dates: July 22-27
Twenty members of the club made the trek to Shelter Cove lodge this year. The lodge is in Craig Alaska, on Prince of Wales Island. We flew to Seattle and then to Ketchikan. From there we picked up a 10 seat all weather turbo-prop aircraft to Craig.
We checked into the lodge, got our room assignments, and picked up our rain gear and boots. Dave, the lodge manager, is always making improvements each year. Nicer and bigger showers in the room was this year’s addition.
The lodge food is great. Covid has caused some changes to however. Breakfast is a buffet. The dinner menu is now a choice of a meat or seafood item with salad and dessert. The lodge staff make the sandwiches for lunch.
The weather was cold and rainy for the first two day, but was very nice for the last two days. Rain or shine, the fishing is always very good. Each year the Alaska Fish & Wildlife issues new limits. This year we could take six silver salmon each day, one halibut a day, one king salmon for the year, and one lingcod a year. This is the second year in row that we could not take a yellow eye rockfish.
Our captains did a great job finding fish for us. They work very hard to get us fish. We got limits of silver salmon and halibut. King salmon and lingcod were not as plentiful. The group caught almost five hundred silver salmon for the trip.
Steve Gammer’s name was added to the Jack Anderson trophy this year. He caught a 31-pound ling cod. The largest king salmon was caught by Terry Tysseland. The largest halibut was caught by Ken Huss.
We will return to Shelter Cove lodge next year. The date is July 22-27, 2023.
Thanks Terry for all the organizing and time you put in making this a successful trip each year.
