Weekly Update
8-18-2022 Meeting
Welcome to the Southern California Tuna Club in it’s 98th year – our founding document shows our actual birthday as August 15th, 1925. Terry Tysseland called the Meeting to Order at 11:55PM with 26 members in attendance. The lighter than normal attendance was due to a number of members out fishing on the Intra Club Tournament with lines in the water today at 3:00PM.

Terry had a collection of between 50 and 100 Reyn Spooner shirts. Dick spoke to Terry’s wife Dianne and asked if she would like to donate the shirts to the SCTC to be sold to the members with the proceeds going to the SCTC Marine Biology Education Scholarship Foundation. Dianne said she thought would be a great idea so special thanks to Dianne for donating the shirts to a very special cause. So everyone be on the lookout for a special notice of a sale of Reyn Spooner shirts.
Paul Southgate and Paul McEachern were not present at last week’s meeting and ‘Bell Ringing’ in Terry’s behalf, gave spontaneous heartfelt eulogies on Terry at this week’s meeting.

Good Cheer Report:
- Al Hermer – has spinal stenosis and will be having a surgery on August 30th for a spinal fusion. He is in significant pain but says he can’t wait to go fishing. We are holding a good thought for Al’s surgery and a speedy and complete recovery. He says to tell everyone that ‘he will be back.’
- Greg Owen – reports that Tom Scott has been in the hospital for the last month and his condition has been up and down recently he is in ICU at UCI. He’s had skin cancer over the years that they have been carving out and he’s had glass particles in his lungs (pulmonary fibrosis) and other
issues. Covid put him in the hospital and then the issues began to
compound. As I type this I just heard from Greg who says that the next 48 – 72 hours are critical. Please hold a good thought for Tom keep him in your prayers.
- Bob Briggs – still in significant pain and going to a doctor for another opinion for his ongoing treatment.
New Members: None.
Weight Slips:
- David Obenauer – caught a 100.8 pound BFT on the boat Terrible with Captain Brett Crane. This qualifies for a Boat Flag and a Gold & Blue Button.
Fish Reports:
- Paul McEachern – reports that he, Captain Geno, Hank Brown and Brock went out on the Maveric and they saw everything to indicate there were fish but nothing biting until Hank hooked up on a BFT and worked it for over 2 hours with the fish spooling the reel several times, circling the boat and swimming in circles. When Hank got the fish alongside it dove under the boat and the line was cut in the propellers. Paul characterized it as an ‘epic fight’ and Hank says ‘he is ready to do it again’.
- Thom Ryan – reports that he and kids and Dan on the Sea Ya Mundy went to Catalina for a few days. Weather was rough crossing and they fished off the mooring in Cherry Cove catching Calico Bass and a Sheepshead. They had a wonderful Catalana Trip.
Past Events:
- Paul Rybak hosted 20 members to the Annual Club Trophy Clays Shoot at LA Clays on Wednesday where 20 guys each shot 100 clays in the morning with a nice taco bar lunch and awards ceremony to follow. Tyler Jackson won the event and the honor to have his name engraved on the Paul Rybak/H. E. Ridings Trophy for the second year in a row. A great time was had by all with everyone winning a prize.
